To become a licensed member of the Saskatchewan Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (SANP), internationally educated applicants must follow a defined certification pathway that ensures equivalency with Canadian-trained naturopathic doctors. Internationally educated applicants seeking to be licensed by the Saskatchewan Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (SANP) have two routes by which they can access registration. The key steps are as follows:
1. (a) Educational Assessment and Bridging
Internationally educated naturopathic doctors can have their credentials assessed by a naturopathic education program accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. In Canada, that is the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine (CCNM) which has two campuses, one in Toronto and one in Vancouver. After this assessment, the candidate will take any necessary additional education through the educational program and, upon successful graduation from the program, they would sit the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), both Part I (Biomedical Science) and Part II (Clinical Science) administered by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners, OR CoNO Biomedical Examination and the Ontario Clinic Sciences Examination.
Or
1. (b) Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition Program
The second route we make available is through our sister regulatory College in Ontario, the College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CoNO) where the candidate will complete the PLAR Program. Through the PLAR program’s paper-based, knowledge-based and demonstration-based assessment components, a determination is made as to whether the candidate has the naturopathic knowledge and clinical competency (gained through a combination of education and work experience) substantially equivalent to a person who has completed the aforementioned CNME-accredited program. As part of the PLAR Program, the candidate will sit the Ontario Biomedical Examination (Stage 2 of PLAR) and the Ontario Clinical Sciences Examination (Stage 3 of PLAR).
2. Provincial Requirements – Clinical Practical Examinations
In addition to national licensing exams or PLAR program, SANP requires confirmation of successful completion of the following practical examinations, which may be completed through College of Naturopaths of Ontario (CoNO) or the College of Complementary Health Professionals of British Columbia (CCHPBC):
a. Naturopathic Manipulation
b. Physical Examination/Instrumentation
c. Acupuncture (Provided in Ontario only and optional in Saskatchewan)
Proof of completion must be submitted with the application for registration.
3. Jurisprudence and Additional Provincial Requirements
Applicants must also:
a. Pass the SANP Jurisprudence Exam
b. Provide evidence of current liability insurance
c. Hold CPR certification
d. Meet any other regulatory criteria outlined by SANP
4. Application for Registration with SANP
Once all educational, examination, and provincial requirements are met, applicants may submit a full application for membership. Application forms, instructions, and checklists are available on the SANP website: https://www.sanp.ca
We encourage internationally educated naturopathic doctors to begin the PLAR process as early as possible, as it forms the foundation for successful licensure in Saskatchewan.
